What are the notes that would make the leather more feminine?The craftsmen always speak about this leather, that it has one side that is flesh and the other side that is rose. When I found this leather, I had this association that I want to find a counterpart for this leather and that would be the rose. What I want is that there will be a balance between the two, which is hard because usually leather overpowers anything else. So it was a lot of technical work to achieve the balance where they are both equal—the rose and the leather.What was your relationship with Hermès before you came on board?I always wanted to be the perfumer of the house and there was one house that I wanted in particular to be a perfumer of which was Hermès. However, you cannot just say you want to be a perfumer so when they came and asked me, it was the most beautiful thing in my life. So we have really common grounds. The materials, the textures are very, very important in the creation in Hermès, which is true for me. And we are all detail-oriented. Well, perfume is not something just in the air. It’s also something that sticks to the skin. I have a very scientific background jensarentzen , which actually gives me a lot of freedom in my creations for me to be able to achieve that balance between the leather and the rose.Can you tell me about the bottle?So this bottle we actually got from the museum of Hermès, we found only one that was broken. This perfume [bottle] was offered but never sold. In the inauguration of our first store oversees as of France and it was in 1929 in New York. When Pierre-Alexis Dumas saw the bottle, it was like “This is the perfect bottle for this perfume.” This is a great fit and the story started there.Were you also inspired by the bottle or just the leather?So the inspiration was the leather, but I was present during the choice of the bottle, the choice of the name and the communication. Every step. So the perfumer is present at every step of the creation and it’s coming out.Is that level of involvement unusual for a perfumer?Yeah, it’s unusual. Then when I was asked to talk about the perfume, I really talked about the story that brought the perfume about which is usually the opposite that happens that you create the perfume and then you superimpose the story on top of that.
